2009 was yet another successful year for Tipperary Ladies Football obtaining 2 Munster titles at U16 and Minor levels and competing in two All Ireland finals at the same levels with the U16 ladies bringing home the All Ireland title. The Senior ladies competed in the NFL Division 2 final but were runners up on the day. The hard work, commitment, dedication, skill and achievements of the Management teams and players who were involved in these games were acknowledged in the Horse and Jockey Hotel on Saturday 13th last. The U16 girls received their Munster and All Ireland medals; the Minor girls received their Munster medals and All Ireland runners-up medals; and the senior ladies received their National Football League Division 2 runners up medals. The night was made special by the presence of the current President of Ladies Gaelic Association Mr. Pat Quill and his wife Liz.
The County Board Secretary Mr. Andrew Meaney was Master of Ceremonies and opened the ceremony by welcoming all who were in attendance and called upon the County Board Chairperson Mr. Enda McDonnell to say his few words. Mr. McDonnell firstly welcomed special guest Mr. Pat Quill and then went on to state the achievement of the Tipperary Ladies teams in 2009. He thanked the players, selectors and managers for their and hard work and dedication and said he hoped the County could be as successful in 2010. Mr. McDonnell then called upon Mr. Pat Quill, President of the Ladies Gaelic Association to say his few kind words. Mr. Quill stated that the Ladies Gaelic association had currently approximately 130,000 members and over 1,000 clubs registered nationally. All the hard work of volunteers is extremely important, however he emphasised the importance of the players and their commitment. He stated how successful the Tipperary ladies have been, especially with five Tipperary ladies being named on the NFL team for 2009 and how the talents of Angie McDermott and Edel Hanley were being rewarded with their trip to San Francisco later this year with the All Star team. He expressed the importance of bringing and keeping the talent coming up through the ranks and how girls should always express their involvement in National Sports to make themselves successful in Job Applications etc. Mr. Quill also complemented the work being done on a National level by Mr. Enda McDonnell, Ms. Olive McDonnell, Ms. Biddy Ryan; Mr. Liam Shinnink and Ms. Mary Shinnick. Mr. Quill closed his speech with the following statement which should be everything into perspective for all these young players “Today’s events are Tomorrow’s history”. Mr. Meaney then called upon the managers of each of the teams who were being presented with their medals on the evening.
First up was Shane Ronayne who was Manager of both the Senior and Minor teams in 2009. Shane listed the achievements of the senior team firstly and called upon the players listed below to come forward individually to receive their medals. Next up were the Minor ladies who collected their medals from Mr. Pat Quill. Ms. Libby Grogan, Manager of the U16 team then took the microphone and thanked her players, management team, county board, players, and “Lucky Leprechaun Restaurant, Clogheen” for their sponsorship. The U16 girls then came forward and received their Munster and All Ireland medals for 2009 from Mr. Pat Quill. The following is a brief rundown on how each of the teams obtained their medals in 2009. The U16 ladies won their Munster title by comprehensively overcoming Waterford and Limerick in the round robin stages and again defeating Waterford in the Munster final by a much narrower margin on a score-line of 3-12 to 5-05. They were then to meet Westmeath in the All Ireland semi-final and defeated them to set up an All Ireland final against Roscommon. They were successful on All Ireland final day and emerged victorious on a score line of 1-11 to 0-08.
The Minor ladies competed in their Munster campaign and collected their Munster title after defeating Waterford and Limerick in their round robin stages and also overcame Waterford in the Munster final in an exciting game which saw the Premier Ladies emerge Munster Champions on a score line of 4-12 to 3-10. With their campaign being a mirror of the U16 year, they too defeated Westmeath in the All Ireland semi final to reach an All Ireland final against Roscommon. However, luck was not with these girls on the day and were extremely unlucky to be runners up on the day on a score-line of 2-07 to 1-07.
The newly promoted senior ladies team competed in the National Football League Division 2A and progressed through their five rounds with five wins from five games. They then overcame Longford in the quarter-final and Waterford in the semi-final to set up a place in the final against Down. However two quick goals by the Down ladies were to prove the difference on the day and they were runners up on the day on a score-line of 2-12 to 0-11. Following such a successful league campaign, the following five Tipperary ladies were named as part of the Bord Gais National Football League Division 2 team for 2009. Aoife O’Dwyer was named at right corner back; Siobhán Costello was named at left half back; Angie McDermott was named at centre-field; Gillian O’Brien was named at left half forward and Edel Hanley was named at right corner forward. The girls received their presentations at an awards ceremony which was held in Croke Park.
Finally we would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Tom Egan and the Horse and Jockey Hotel for their continued support and sponsorship to the Senior Tipperary Ladies team. Thank you to all who attended and supported the evening and made it a special one for all involved.
